The project is located in Castle area of Kimolos island. The typology of the existing building is the typical of every historic centre of the Cycladic islands. It has common rear walls with the buildings on the left and right, and two floors with an exterior staircase, because every floor used to have a different owner.
The idea regarding the exterior is to restore the mansonry made of local stone and eliminate the access to the first floor in order to have a front yard on the ground floor. At the back there is also a yard for the customers with an extra entrance from the pedestrian path. Both entrances of the building are two glass doors at the same direction and connected with a corridor inside that helps the passage inside out the restaurant.
This initial design idea for the interior organize the rest of the interior functions of the restaurant. The kitchen, due to the space limitations as well, is longitudinal from the main entrance at the front facade to the back where the interior staircase is located. That way, there is the eating and drinking bench alongside the kitchen which maximizes the number of seats available inside the restaurant. Between the kitchen and the bench, there is a facade made of glass with openings and fish storage units that serve as a trasparent experience for the customers who are able to see the food ordered and the cooking process almost like an asian restaurant.
The staircase inside is placed at the back of the restaurant, which gives the advantage of having openings at both the front and back facades of the restaurant for maximum natural light in the space inside. The interior walls besides the longitudinal facade made of glass and steel, are made of plywood and are in three different colors in order to not only indicate the space for the staff, the staircase and the bathrooms, but also to characterize big part of the interior design. On the second floor besides the bathrooms there is a mini bar and a leisure area with a view of the restauran’s back yard.
Besides the space limitations inside the restaurant, all regulations regarding specifically the squaremeters of the kitchen and its equipment, and the bathrooms that had to include an anteroom are followed.
